Skiing at Tenney Mountain dates back to the 1930s, when local skiers carved their own routes down the mountain – often following old logging roads. At the time, Plymouth was one of New England’s premier ski destinations, with direct train service from Boston bringing visitors north to experience the region’s growing ski culture.

Following World War II, 10th Mountain Division veteran Sam Hall recognized the mountain’s potential and set out to establish a lift-served ski area. By 1959, Tenney’s first formal trails had been cut and were served by a T-bar lift, laying the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of skiing in central New Hampshire.

In 1964, Tenney took a major step forward with the installation of the Hornet Double chairlift, famously carried up the mountain by hand. This expansion transformed Tenney into one of the largest ski areas in the region at the time and established a legacy that continues today, with the Hornet still serving skiers and riders.

The mountain continued to grow through the 1980s with the addition of the Eclipse triple chairlift and expanded terrain, solidifying Tenney’s reputation as a classic New England ski destination.

Like many independent ski areas, Tenney Mountain experienced periods of change in the decades that followed. Shifts in ownership, challenging winters, and industry pressures led to intermittent closures, including a significant pause in operations in the 2010s.

Today, Tenney Mountain is in the midst of a new chapter. Under the ownership of Northcountry Development Group, the mountain has undergone significant reinvestment focused on restoring operations, improving infrastructure, and preserving the spirit that defines the Tenney experience.

What remains unchanged is the essence of Tenney: a place rooted in history, shaped by its community, and driven by a passion for authentic skiing and riding. As we continue to build toward the future, our commitment is simple – to offer a genuine, family-focused mountain experience while honoring the legacy that has made Tenney special for generations.
